When we are building a house, we need to be sure of a few things.  First, we must make the foundation firm so that it will not sink into the ground and fall apart.  Next, we must make sure the walls are square and plumb so they do not collapse upon themselves.  Finally, we tie it all together with a roof that shelters the occupants within and keeps the damaging rain from the foundation.

Peter describes the church as a spiritual house, and its foundation is a living stone, the cornerstone Jesus Christ.  He quotes Isaiah 28:16 and Psalm 118:22 and points to Jesus as that very cornerstone.  A cornerstone is important because it gives bias to the entire structure.  However the cornerstone is laid, the rest of the building follows.  And so we who follow Christ orient ourselves with him.  In so doing we become brothers and sisters of Christ, adopted into the royal family of God and a priesthood of believers that ministers to a sinful world.
